Introduction

Kids generally don't gravitate towards golf at a young age. They tend to want to play basketball, baseball, football or soccer.

While golf may seem like an intimidating sport for kids to pick up, a little nudging by their parents can help them at least check it out. It's one of the great games for parent and child to play for a lifetime together.

And, there's no reason kids can't paly two sports. Plus, it can actually be a great way for them to learn valuable skills while having fun. From building hand-eye coordination to practicing focus and patience, the benefits of playing golf are numerous.

There are plenty of resources available for families who want to get started in the sport together.

I remember taking my granddaughter to an LPGA event for the first time. The look in her eyes and smile on her face was priceless when one of the tour players came up and gave her a signed golf ball. She fell in love with golf right there and wanted to take lessons as soon as possible.

Emiliano Grillo nearly blew a PGA Tour win. What he did next then to make these kids’ day was truly special

Teach Kids to Golf

Things To Consider

At our local 9 hole executive course, that includes practice facilities, tons of kids show up every day excited to learn and improve on their golf games and play with their friends.

Adults and kids mixing it up together in a safe, comfortable environment. I would love to see more of this type of interaction at facilities around the country.

One of the first things to consider when getting kids started with golf is the equipment. While it may be tempting to buy a set of adult-sized clubs and have your child grow into them, this can actually hinder their progress on the course.

Courses kids play on often have shorter holes and smaller greens than traditional courses, and children's golf clubs are designed with these differences in mind.

Look for junior golf sets that include a driver, irons, and putter that are sized appropriately for your child's height and strength.

Another important aspect of introducing your child to golf is teaching them about etiquette on the course. Golf etiquette for kids includes respecting other players by staying quiet while they're hitting their shots, repairing divots on the green, and not touching or moving other players' balls on the course.

You can also encourage good sportsmanship by reminding your child to congratulate opponents on good shots and accepting defeat graciously.

Whether you're looking for golf activities for kids or actual training sessions, there are plenty of options available depending on your family's goals and interests.

Many local courses offer clinics or lessons specifically tailored towards junior golfers, as well as family-friendly events like parent-child scrambles or tournaments.

You can also find fun golf games for kids online or create your own challenges at home using items like hula hoops or pool noodles as targets.

Overall, introducing your child to golf can be a rewarding experience that teaches them valuable skills both on and off the course.

With the right equipment, etiquette knowledge, and access to resources like lessons or games, youngsters can become confident little golfers in no time.

Junior Golf Tip

Choosing the Right Golf Equipment

When it comes to getting started with golf for kids, choosing the right equipment is crucial. The right equipment not only helps kids enjoy the game but also ensures that they learn and play safely.

When children first express an interest in golf, it can be a memorable time for the whole family. The excitement often begins with buying their first set of golf clubs, where children get to have their own special equipment.

It can be fascinating for them to pick out their clubs and learn about the different types they'll use in their games. Here are some tips on how to choose the right golf equipment for kids.

Firstly, it’s important to consider the size and age of your child when selecting golf clubs. Kids golf equipment is available in different sizes that correspond to various age ranges.

As a rough guide, a child aged 3-5 years will need a club set with 3-4 clubs, while those aged 6-8 years will need 5-7 clubs. Children aged 9-12 years can use a junior set of around 7 clubs.

Secondly, consider the material used in making kids golf clubs. Most junior golf clubs are made of lightweight materials like graphite or aluminum that make them easier for kids to handle. Avoid steel shafts as they are heavier and more challenging for children to swing.

Thirdly, look at grip size and flexibility when choosing a club set. Smaller grips are easier for children's small hands to hold while flexible shafts help players develop their swing technique without injuring their arms. Getting kids started with junior Golf can be an exciting journey for both parents and children alike.

And don't forget a golf bag so they can lug those golf clubs around. Make sure the bag is specifically for juniors and that it has the appropriate amount of pockets so they can carry their accessories including water so they don't dehydrate out on the course.

By following these tips on choosing kids golf clubs based on size, material, grip size, and flexibility you can ensure your child has everything they need to get started with ease!

They develop their motor skills, concentration, and discipline. They experience the joy of improving, the challenge of setbacks, and the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles.

Finally, golf can open doors to new friendships and communities. It's a social sport where kids can make friends with other junior golfers. They learn to cooperate, to compete fairly, and to support their peers.

Getting kids started with junior golf can be an incredible journey for parents and children alike. It's about more than just the game; it's about building character, creating memories, and setting the foundation for a potential lifelong passion.

Golf Etiquette for Junior Golf

When it comes to golfing, etiquette is an essential aspect that every kid should learn. Parents and instructors should teach kids the basics of golf etiquette from an early age.

One aspect of golf etiquette that kids must understand is the importance of silence during a shot. It's crucial for children to know that everyone around them needs to be quiet when someone else is hitting a shot.

Additionally, they should know that running, shouting or any other noise can be distracting to other players. It's amazing to watch a boisterous group of kids all of a sudden become dead quiet in a second when someone is getting ready to hit a shot.

Another key element of golf etiquette is respecting the course itself. Kids must understand the importance of taking care of the greens, fairways, bunkers and roughs on a golf course.

Parents should encourage their children not to litter or damage any part of the course by ensuring they leave everything as they found it. Safety must be at the core of all etiquette teaching when it comes to kids' golfing.

Since children might not have perfect control over their shots, accidents can happen anytime on a green or driving range if people are not vigilant with safety procedures.

Inform your child about basic safety rules such as never standing too close behind someone swinging a club and knowing where others are before striking out on your own.

Teaching kids about proper etiquette in golf is critical for their development as responsible golfers and individuals in general.

As they grow up playing family-friendly games such as mini-golf or youth-oriented courses designed especially for them, instilling good habits early will benefit them immensely in building confidence while enjoying themselves on the green with their peers and family members alike!

Getting Kids Started From the First Tee

Now that you've got your kids excited about golf, it's time to get them started! Here are some tips for introducing children to the wonderful world of golf. First and foremost, make sure you have the appropriate equipment.

Kids need clubs that are specifically designed for their size and strength. Golf for Youngsters can be a bit tricky if they're using adult-sized clubs because they'll be too heavy, too long, and not flexible enough for them.

Kids Golf Equipment is readily available at most sporting goods stores or online retailers. Make sure you choose a set that's appropriate for your child's age and skill level.

Once you have the proper equipment, take your children out on the course or driving range to get a feel for Children's Golf. Junior Golf courses may offer shorter distances between holes which can make it more fun and less intimidating for kids who are just starting out.

Make it a Family Golf outing so everyone can participate in the fun! Start with just putting and chipping games to help kids get comfortable with holding their club correctly as well as swinging correctly.

Golf lessons also form a key part of this journey. Finding a coach who is experienced in teaching junior golfers is crucial. Watching children learn and grow in their skills can be rewarding for parents.

Many golf courses offer professional lessons designed specifically for Kids Golfing which are tailored towards younger players with shorter attention spans while keeping things fun and engaging.

Children often begin with the basics of grip, stance, and swing, before progressing to more complex aspects of the game like strategy and golf etiquette. Many golf clubs and organizations offer golf classes or camps for kids, which can be a great way for them to learn the basics and make friends.

Golf Stance

Then comes the moment of their first swing on the golf course. The thrill of hitting a ball for the first time and watching it fly through the air is something that neither parent nor child is likely to forget.

The first few rounds of golf can be an incredible bonding experience, filled with laughter and shared joy.

Additionally, many golf courses offer special amenities like:

(1) Kids Golf Courses that have smaller greens with lower grass levels;

(2) Miniature-Golf-Style "bumpers" that prevent balls from rolling off of greens; or

(3) Indoor/Outdoor Driving Ranges equipped with launch monitors that use electronic feedback to help beginners track their shots accurately.

With these tips in mind, your kids will be on their way to becoming pros in no time!

Golf Drills and Games for Kids

When it comes to getting kids interested in golf, the best way to do it is by making the game fun! Kids are more likely to stick with something if it's enjoyable and interactive.

That's where drills and games come in. There are countless ways to make learning golf fun for kids, but here are a few of our favorites.

One popular game for kids is "Golf Ball Hunt." This game is great for young children who are just starting out with golf. All you need is a large area, some plastic golf balls, and a basket or container. Scatter the balls around the area and let your child hunt for them with their kid-sized golf club.

This activity helps children develop hand-eye coordination as they try to hit the ball into the basket. Another fun game for kids is "Obstacle Course." Set up an obstacle course using cones, hula hoops, or other items you have around the house. Have your child navigate through the course using their golf club and ball. This activity helps teach children how to control their swing while also developing their problem-solving skills as they navigate through obstacles.

If your child is ready for some more advanced drills, consider setting up a station where they can practice hitting from different angles. You can use targets or markers on the ground to help them aim their shots. You can also set up stations that focus on specific aspects of their swing such as grip or follow-through.

Incorporating games and drills into your child's golf training not only makes learning more enjoyable but also helps them develop fundamental skills that will stick with them throughout their journey in youth golf.

Another great way to get your child excited about golf is to take them to your local Mini-Golf Course. You can take the whole family and make it a family night out while helping to encourage your junior to want to learn more about golf.

I take my grandchildren to Topgolf and we have a blast for a couple of hours. There are different games you can play so it's never repetitive or boring. They love it. We also watch golf on TV as I explain what the player is trying to do with their next shot. It makes them want to understand the game better.

Local Junior Golf Camp Resources

If you're interested in getting your child involved in golf, there are a variety of local resources available to help your child get started on the right foot. Whether you're looking for group lessons or individual instruction, there are plenty of options out there that cater specifically to kids.

One popular resource for kids' golf is junior golf programs offered by local courses. These programs typically offer instruction and practice opportunities for kids of all skill levels, with a focus on fun and skill development.

Many courses also offer youth memberships to help kids get more time on the course and build their skills outside of organized lessons. If you're not sure where to start when it comes to finding local golf resources for your child, one great place to look is your city's parks and recreation department.

Many cities offer youth sports programs that include golf instruction, either through partnerships with local courses or through their own staff-led programs. These can be a great starting point for families who are new to the sport and want a low-cost way to try it out.

Don't forget about private instructors who specialize in teaching golf to kids. While these lessons may be more expensive than group classes or city-run programs, they can provide targeted one-on-one instruction that can help your child improve their skills quickly.

Look for instructors who have experience working with young players and who use age-appropriate equipment like shorter clubs and softer balls designed specifically for children's hands and swings.

Things That Can Turn Kids Away From Golf

Obsessing

From my experience there are generally two reasons parents want their kids to play golf. The first is, they believe golf can be healthy for the development of their child, the second is, they believe golf can be a way for their child to get a scholarship to higher education or possibly become a pro golfer.

While either reason is fine be careful about obsessing over golf and forcing your child to focus solely on golf. Remember, they are kids and want to do kid things.

For most kids If all they get to do is practice and play golf they will learn to resent it. There are the exceptions where it's all the kid wants to do and then you have to balance that issue as well.

Frustration

If you show frustration with your child's game or yours they just won't  feel like golf is worth it. Encourage them and let them know it's ok to struggle on your way to excellence.

Keeping Score

One of the things I like to do when taking swing changes out to the golf course is not keep score. I find this is a great way to focus solely on the changes I am trying to make and not have the pressure of trying to keep up with my score.
